How to use the calculators

Grams to cups

I think the most common conversion is from grams to cups, as we convert between US and English recipes, but I know my South African readers would want to convert their recipes into millilitres.

  • Select an ingredient -Select the ingredient you want from the drop-down list. To make it easy to find the ingredients you are looking for, I have listed them alphabetically. Alternatively, enter a letter and the list will display the first ingredient starting with that letter. There is a comprehensive list of ingredients to select from and I will be adding more ingredients periodically.
  • Select the unit to convert from - this is the measurement in the original recipe. For example, if the original recipe states 100 grams, select 'Grams' from the dropdown list. You can select from Grams, US cups, Metric cups, Ounces, Millilitres or Tablespoons.
  • Enter the amount you want to convert from into the 'Amount to convert' field - this must be a number. For example, to convert 100 grams of flour, enter 100, or if you are converting from cups and would like to convert ½ cup of flour, enter .5.
  • Press the convert button - the conversions will be displayed in the table below the calculator. You can convert anything between grams, US cups, Metric cups, ounces, millilitres and tablespoons.

If the results of the cup conversions do not work out to whole cups, the results will show as cups + tablespoons.

If there is a particular ingredient you want, that isn't on the list, please let me know (you can email me at [emailprotected]). Otherwise, just request it in the comments below and I will add it for you.

Temperature

Select your preferred unit of heat - either Celsius, Fahrenheit or Gas Mark. Enter the degrees in the Temperature field. Press 'Convert' and the calculator will display the corresponding temperatures for you.

Cup measurements

Depending on where you live in the world, a cup size can differ. In the US, the standard cup size is 240 ml. The rest of the Western world uses the metric cup size which is 250 ml. Because there is such a small difference between US and metric cups (10 ml - or 2 teaspoons), it shouldn't make too much difference to your recipe if you use either cup. Just use the same measuring cup for all ingredients in your recipe.

With the exception of the metric cup measurements, all the calculations are based on the US cups.

The calculations for ounces are for weight, not volume. Fluid ounces are not included.

A measuring scale is more accurate

To be perfectly honest, I find I get a more accurate result if I use my measuring scales rather than measuring cups.

There is a reason for this. The weight of ingredients in a cup can vary depending on a number of factors:

  • how tightly packed the cup is.
  • whether the flour has been sifted before being packed into the cup.
  • how evenly the top of the cup has been levelled.

As you can see from the pictures below there is a 20 gram difference between 2 cups of flour. The first has been scooped and levelled and the second has been packed slightly before being levelled. If you were to pack the flour even more firmly in the cup, the weight would go up even more.

You will also get different results for ingredients that have to be chopped, eg nuts, as the amount you will get in the cup will vary depending on how small the nuts have been chopped.

My advice to you would be to invest in an electronic scale and get perfect results every time.

There is not much difference between a US cup and a Metric cup, and as long as you stick to the same cup for your recipe there should not be any noticeable difference in the outcome.

  • 1 US cup =16 tablespoons / 240 ml / 0.95 metric cups
  • 1 metric cup = 16.6 tablespoons / 250 ml / 1.06 US cups

  • 1 ounce = 28.35 grams
  • 1 gram = 0.035274 ounces
  • 2 cups = 1 pint
  • 1 stick butter (US) = 113 grams (or 4 ounces)

Ingredients used in calculator

Different ingredients have different weights. By volume, 1 cup of sugar is heavier than 1 cup of flour. This has been taken into consideration in the calculations.

I've included the most common ingredients in the dropdown list. If there are any you would like added, leave me a comment and I'll be more than happy to update the calculator for you.

While I have made every effort to get these measures accurate. If you feel I have made a mistake, please let me know so I can correct it.

Calculations have been based on the number of grams in a standard US Cup (240 ml).
