Alright, picture this: You're gearing up for the big moment – the birth of your precious bundle of joy. But wait, there's a twist! You've got options, my friend. Let's break it down:

Ever dreamed of having your own mini oasis during labor? Enter: water birth. Picture yourself floating in warm, comforting water, easing those contractions like a champ. It's like a spa day meets delivery – sign me up, right?

Traditional Birth: Tried and True, with a Side of Support

Now, let's talk tradition. With a team of rockstar healthcare professionals by your side, you'll tackle labor head-on with confidence and a dash of pizzazz. Think of it as your squad cheering you on through every contraction. You've got this!

What you need to know about Auckland North Shore Hospital

Birthing Facilities –North Shore Hospital has a large birthing suite featuring a total of ten birthing rooms and three deep water birth pools. There is also space to assess and monitor 4 women in pregnancy or early labour. For women who are cared for by the community midwifery service, care during labour and birth is provided by North Shore Hospital facility midwives.

What you need to know about Helensville Birthing Centre

Our spacious and private birthing suite allows plenty of room for you to be active and upright while you labour and be supported by those you choose to have with you. Equipment such as birthing balls and wall bars are available for your use. You can also immerse yourself in our deep birthing pool as you relax and enhance the natural flow of labour hormones.

What you need to know about Warkworth Birth Centre

At the Birthing Centre, both birthing rooms have their own pools. All midwives using the pool must be experienced in water birthing, and if not they must have someone experienced with them.

What you need to know about Wellsford Birthing Unit

Wellsford Birthing Unit is a two bedrooms with birthing pools and postnatal care facility that was established in 1992. It provides a relaxed, professional and comfortable environment with quality birthing and postnatal care for both mother and baby.

Some Water Birth Facts:

  • Whilst in the pool, your temperature, pulse and baby’s heartbeat are monitored frequently. This ensures you and the baby are not getting too hot. To prevent overheating and dehydration, cool facecloths, ice-water, and plenty of fluids are encouraged.

  • The water temperature is kept at a safe level for baby of 36 – 37 degrees Celsius. This means the baby will not take a breath until it reaches the surface.

  • Babies are brought to the surface as soon as they are born.

  • Birthing the placenta usually occurs out of the water.

  • The water is kept as clean as possible, therefore partners and support people are encouraged to stay out of the pool or shower before entering. Aromatherapy oils are placed in a burner rather than added to the pool water.

Reasons why water birth might not be for you

  • If your waters have been broken for longer than 18 hours.

  • If meconium (baby’s bowel motion) is present in the waters.

  • If you have an infection e.g Hepatitis B.

  • If you have a high temperature or diarrhoea.

  • If the baby is distressed or needs close watching.

  • If you have a past history of any birth problems.

  • If your caregiver recommends you leaving the pool. You can discuss this with her at the time.
