What baby should wear home from hospital? ›

Choosing an outfit for a newborn is all about snuggly cottons that won't irritate their delicate skin. Look out for fabrics that are anti-allergy and have heat-regulating properties, so they'll enjoy comfy nights and cosy cuddles.

A good rule of thumb is to give your baby 1 extra layer of clothing than what you're wearing. For example, if you're in a t-shirt and jumper, dress them in a vest, sleepsuit and cardigan or jumper. If you feel chilly, your baby probably does too.

Clothes wise, immediately post-partum or for coming home, I would recommend stretchy dresses or leggings and a large t-shirt or vest in the summer months. In the colder months, joggers, leggings, or trusty maternity dungarees are perfect. A hoody or cardigan to keep warm too.

For babies born in the spring or fall, short sleeves, a light jacket or a one-piece sleeper and a comfy blanket should be the perfect amount of clothing. In the winter, you'll want to take extra precautions to make sure your baby stays warm on the ride home.

We put DS in a 0-3 onesie to bring him home and it was a little big, didn't bother his belly button at all. Pants are not good, but sleepers are onesies with a little room to spare were perfectly fine for us. DS wore the side snapped shirts & diapers provided by the hospital. I brought socks & a hat for him.

All they need to wear is a onesie underneath their swaddling blanket, if they like to be swaddled. You can also find long-sleeve onesies with built-in mittens, if they tend to scratch themselves. If baby doesn't like to be swaddled, try a sleep sack.

0-3 Months Clothing Size

Since your baby will be growing pretty quickly at this stage, it's a good idea not to go overboard. Stick to the two outfits a day rule, making sure you have at least 14 different options to experiment with. Onesies and rompers are still excellent choices here.

Babies are notoriously messy, and you might need to change their outfits 2-4 times a day just because they spat and got their onesie dirty again. Factor in the outfit needed for their 'outside' time, and you'll quickly come to learn you might need a few outfit changes throughout the day.

Your newborn coming home outfit will vary based on where you live and current conditions. But it never hurts to consider packing an extra onesie or cardigan—just in case. A breathable cotton or muslin blanket is also a great item to have on hand.

Use comfortably fitting—not tight—onesies, or just dress baby in diapers and T-shirts.

Balancing the temperature is not only about comfort but about your baby's safety. For example, a room that's too hot can increase the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), while a too-cold room could lead to hypothermia and frostbite in extreme cases.

Embrace layers.

Start with a long sleeve cotton bodysuit, then add soft pants, socks, and a sweatshirt or sweater. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), it's often best to dress your infant in one more layer than you're wearing. (And, if your baby gets too warm, simply peel a layer off.)

I see it recommended to bring a new born outfit and a 0-3 outfit for going home (long sleeved/legged onesie, hat, mittens, socks), but they'll have some stuff for your baby at the hospital during your stay. Don't forget comfy going home clothes for yourself and your support person should have a change of clothes, too.

For maximum safety, we recommend rear seat travel for your little one. Never hold your baby in your arms when travelling in the car – it's very dangerous. A sudden stop may cause your baby to shoot out of your arms and be thrown against the dashboard.
